Prominent Citizen Suddenly Stricken

J. C. Mannigel Dies After an Illness of Three Days Duration

________________________

J. C. Mannigel, a resident of Rock county for the past thirty years, died at his home here last Monday [October 16, 1922] evening after an illness of only three days.  Death was occasioned by chronic Bright’s Disease and a stroke of paralysis.  Mr. Mannigel was first stricken last Saturday afternoon while witnessing a football game at the Athletic Park.  He immediately sank to the ground and when offered assistance he turned it away saying that he was merely suffering from a dizzy spell.  When his condition failed to improve he allowed his friends to assist him to his car.  He was taken to his home at 319 Brown Street and physicians were called.  A few hours after reaching his home Mr. Mannigel abandoned hope and voiced the belief that he was near death to his daughter.

John C. Mannigel was born in Dane [Dodge] county, Wisconsin on August 4, 1871, the son of Carl and Bertha Mannigel, early settlers of Dane [Dodge] county.  Twelve years later he moved with his parents to Hand county, North Dakota [South Dakota], where he remained on his father’s homestead until he reached the age of twenty-one years, at which time he came to Rock county and hired out on a farm in Mound township.  In 1879 by dint of much hard work and perseverance he was able to rent a farm and start up independently.  In 1900 he purchased a farm of his own in Denver township, later coming into possession of one hundred and sixty acres of section thirty of the same township.  In 1912 he left the farm and moved his family to Hardwick where he took over the management of the Farmers’ Elevator Co. of that place in which he had long been interested.  In the fall of 1917 he came to Luverne where he accepted a position as manager of an elevator for the late J. P. Coffey and later purchased the business himself.  Since that time Mr. Mannigel has had charge of the elevator, first in partnership with a Mr. Miller, then with E H. Moreland and finally with W. R. Rathjen.

On December 13, 1897, Mr. Mannigel was united in marriage to Anna Richard [Reichert].  To this union six children have been born:  Elfrieda, Victor, Oswald, Lucille, Gordon and Mervin, all of whom survive with their mother.

In his earlier days Mr. Mannigel was interested in athletics and up to the time of his death he was enthusiastic about all outdoor sports. He was well known, not only in this community, but throughout the county and his death has deprived this locality of one of its must public spirited citizens.

Funeral services will be held today at 1:30 from St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rev. Ristau officiating, and E. H. Moreland, William Engelking, William Rathjen, Julius Pieper, J. A. Rolfing and William Stelling will act as pall bearers.

Suffers Stroke While Watching Ball Game

Death Great Shock to Wide Circle of Friends – funeral Services Held Yesterday Afternoon

John C. Mannigel, for the past ten years prominently identified with the grain markets of Luverne and Hardwick, passed away Monday night {October 16, 1922] at 1:40 o’clock at his home in this city, after a very short illness.

Mr. Mannigel’s passing came as a great shock to members of his family as well as his wide circle of acquaintances, for no one had the slightest inkling that he was nearing the sunset of his life.  To his friends he appeared to be in robust health, with the prospects of living many years.

He had been trouble somewhat with Bright’s disease for some time, however, and this with a slight stroke of paralysis was the cause of his death.  Saturday afternoon he had gone to Athletic park to witness the football game between the high school teams of Luverne and Slayton, and incidentally to watch his son, Oswald, who is a member of the Luverne team, play.  It was while thus engaged that Mr. Mannigel suffered the stroke at about four o’clock.

He was removed to his home, and his condition was not thought to be especially serious until Sunday, although he suffered much pain Saturday afternoon, when he lapsed into unconsciousness and remained in this state until the end came Monday night.

Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon [Thursday, October 19, 1922] at 1:30 at the home and at 2:15 at St. John’s Lutheran church, Rev. P. H. Ristau performing the obsequies.  Internment was in Maplewood cemetery. E. H. Moreland, Wm. Rathjen, Julius Peiper, Wm. Engelking, Wm. Stelling and J. A. Rolfing acted as pall bearers.

John C. Mannigel was born on August 4th, 1871, in Dodge county, Wisconsin.  At the age of twelve years he moved with his parents [Carl and Bertha Grunewald] to Hand county, S. D., and when twenty-one years old, he came to Rock county.  He was employed on various farms for five years, and then engaged in farming for himself.

In 1900 he purchased his first farm on section 2, Mound township, and later owned a farm on section 7, Denver township.  He quit farming in 1911 and for the succeeding five years was manager of the E. A. Brown elevator at Hardwick.  He came to Luverne five years ago, and first bought half interest in the Coffey elevator, becoming a member of the firm of Mannigel & Miller Grain Co.  It was later changed to the Mannigel-Moreland Grain Co., and for the past year or more the firm had been known as the Mannigel-Rathjen Grain Co.

Mr. Mannigel was a man of many admirable qualities, and enjoyed in full measure the confidence and esteem of all who knew him.
