Frederick’s
wife’s name was Louise Marie. Her
maiden name is still not known. She and
Frederick and their first child Bertha came to America
in 1874, settling in Dodge County, Wisconsin. Two more children were born to Frederick
and Louise, Otto (born 1878) and Mary (born 1878). Frederick
died and left Louise with three children to care for. She was living as a widow with the children
in Lowell Township,
Dodge County, Wisconsin
in the US Census for 1880. She was
listed as “Loisa” and 63 years old. For
many years this was a confusing factor.
A 63-year-old widow with three small children listed as her daughters
and son. Research showed that Louisa was
actually born around 1844. “Loisa” was
listed on page 304D of the census and another Mannigel family (Carl and Bertha Mannigel)
were listed on 304A).
On November 19, 1881, Louise remarried to Adam Schaller, a
widower with many children. (Reeseville Wisconsin
website: http://webpages.charter.net/reeseville/adamschallerobituary.htm) Louisa went by the name of Marie in her
marriage records with Adam Schaller.
Adam and Louisa had one child: Carl
W. Schaller who went by the name of “Charles.”
Charles Schaller was born
in February 5,1883
in Dodge County, Wisconsin. In the 1900 US Census for Dodge
County, Wisconsin he is the
only child living with his parents in Portland
Township, Dodge
County, Wisconsin.
Note: An unusual entry in the same 1900 census
shows Loisa saying she came to America in 1870 but the immigration records show
her arriving in New York City on May 14, 1874 with her husband Frederick, and
daughter Bertha.
Charles married Alwina Kohls August 27, 1903. (see
newspaper announcement below)
In the 1910 US Census, Charles and
Alwina are living in Lowell Township,
Dodge County, Wisconsin. Their children Hazel (b: 1904), Gilbert (b:
ca 1906), Reuben (b: 24 Dec 1907),
Vera (b: ca 1910) are living with them.
Charles registered for the WWI
draft September 12, 1918. He stated he was born February 5, 1883. He was working for a farmer by the last name
of Benninger in Reeseville. He and
Alwina lived on RR1 in Reeseville, Dodge County,
Wisconsin.
In the 1920 US Census for Dodge
County, Wisconsin, Charles is shown living in Elba Township with his wife
Alwina and children: Hazel (b: 1904),
Gilbert (b: ca 1906), Reuben (b: 24 Dec 1907), Vera (b: ca 1910); Elda (b: ca
1912), Evelyn (b: Sep 20, 1913), Merlin (b: ca 1917); Alvin (b: Oct 3, 1919). Also living with Charles and family was his
mother Louisa. She is a widow, Adam
Schaller having died in 1904. In this
census she says she immigrated in “1878 ab.”
So she evidently realized she could no longer remember the exact
year. She was 76 at the time of this
census.
In the 1930 US Census, Alwina has
died (1927). Charles and his children
Ruben, Vera, Elda, Evelyn, Merlin,
Alvina, Edward, Grace, Ellen, and Leo are living in Lowell
Township, Dodge
County, Wisconsin.
Charles died in 1966. The last one of Charles and Alwina’s
children, Leo, died September 2005.
