Johann Karl Mannigel (1843– 1931)

(son of Johann and Wilhelmine Brooks Mannigel)

Birth:

Carl Mannigel was born October 14, 1843 in Prussia.  (death certificate.  California #31-008980).  He emigrated from Wilkersdorf, Brandenburg, Prussia so it is most likely he was born there or at least in Brandenburg, Prussia. Wilkersdorf is just east of the Oder River.  Formerly part of Germany, because of a World War II agreement, that land was ceded to Poland and the Germans in that area were pushed west into Berlin.  So Wilkersdorf was renamed Krzesnica in 1945.

Hand County years

“The year 1882-1883 represented the greatest migration into Hand County [South Dakota], and a good crop was harvested that year, lending to the high spirits ofth epioneers.  But crops failed consistently for the next seven years.” [Heidepriem, Scott N. Bring on the Pioneers:  History of Hand County.  Miller Press, South Dakota: 1978. pgs:  53-54]

The Blizzard of 1888 was on Wenesday, January 11.
